SCC Art Show Features Students and Teachers

Dr. Gerard Catapano teaches Continuing Education Oil Painting classes at Sandhills Community College. The instructors and students will have their Visual and Fine Arts Exhibit from March 5-26 in the Hastings Gallery in the Katharine L. Boyd Library at the college. The public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday, March 5 from 4-6 p.m.

Paintings, drawings, pottery, and stained glass works created by students and instructors from the division of Continuing Education at Sandhills Community College will be on exhibit from March 5 through March 26. The Hastings Gallery is located in the Katharine L. Boyd Library on the college campus.

The group will hold an opening reception on Thursday, March 5 from 4-6 p.m.

“Our exhibit serves two purposes,” said Teresa Reynolds, senior director of community education. “It's a chance for our students and instructors to show their work and it's an opportunity for the community to see what is available for them to learn at the college. This year, we are excited to add the works of two new artists and their students from the drawing, acrylic and pottery classes.”

The Continuing Education art courses represented in this March exhibit are Watercolor Painting Workshop; Draw and Paint with Ann; Oil Painting; Drawing Techniques; Acrylic Painting; Pottery Making, and Stained, Leaded and Beveled Glass.

Instructors in these classes are an eclectic group of artists — some who have been practicing their craft for decades and others who discovered their talent later in life. All inspire students to expand their understanding and skills in visual and fine arts.

Gloria Bateman is the instructor for the Watercolor Painting Workshop. She has been a watercolorist for many years and began teaching at Sandhills in 2005. She teaches all levels of instruction. Most of her works are in private collections.

Ann Campbell teaches Draw and Paint with Ann at West End Methodist Church. She spends her summers pursuing opportunities with other artists, most recently at the Vermont Studio Center, an art retreat in Johnson, VT. Three of her watercolor paintings are on permanent display in Van Dusen Hall at Sandhills and many others are in private collections.

Retired physician Dr. Gerard Catapano teaches Oil Painting. Known for his impressionist style, he is an accomplished muralist who has been commissioned by several local restaurants to paint European scenes. Other works by Catapano are in private collections.

Leigh Swanson teaches Drawing Techniques & Principles and Color & Light in Acrylics. She majored in art at the University of Colorado. Last October 40 of her paintings were on display at the Campbell House Gallery. Swanson has many commissions in private collections.

Retired emergency room physician Dr. Philip Woodhall has been a potter since 1995. His classes are held off-campus in a studio in Southern Pines. His primary interest is in wheel-thrown functional stoneware and porcelain.

Bob Dresher began working in stained glass shortly before retiring and now teaches his craft at the college. Many of his windows, entryway glass and skylights are displayed in local homes and businesses. His work can also be found in Michigan, New York, Florida, and California, as well as in England and Canada.

Enrolling in Continuing Education classes is a simple process. Students can call or come by the office in Van Dusen Hall at least two weeks before a course begins and register. The number to call for registration is 695-3980. Sandhills is located on Airport Road in Pinehurst.

All classes are listed and described in the spring schedule that was mailed to all households and can also be found at http://www.sandhills.edu/.
